The 9-3 and 9-5 are so-called as they are competitors to the BMW 3 and 5 series. Saab (read GM) is wanting to increase market share and they need to lure drivers of german hardware. To make it easy for these salesmen types, they have numbers that they can easily identify with. As regards your explanation above, the 900 and 9000 of the mid 1980s saw the 99 rebadged as 90 to fit a model range of 90, 900 and 9000. The numbers 93 and 95 were in a sequence where 90 and 91 had been used for aircraft projects (91 was Saab Safir), then we had 92, 92B, 93, 93B, 93F, 94 which was the Saab Sonett Super Sport and then 95 introduced in 1959. The Saab 96 was introduced in 1960.
