Thanks Paul... I since went out and checked this again. It seems that the headlight relay is the longer, rectangular relay on the outside, rear end of the fusebox. Forward from there is the relay for the rear window defogger. It is that relay (timer?) that has the wooden block retrofit. Wiggling that timer will cause the headlamps to go off and on. I think the real problem is as you said, a bad connection on the headlamp relay. I'll follow your instructions this weekend and take care of that... along with the wheel bearing.
