Subject: How does SID work?

I have a new 9-3 with the basic SID display, including ave. mph, miles to empty tank, and ave. mpg. I'd like to know more about the SID and fuel gauge. What sensors are involved, for example, are SID readings based on the tank gauge, or some kind of a fuel-flow sensor? How, and how often, is the DTE (distance to empty) calculated? My fuel gauge stays on full for the first third or so of a tank and then drops relatively fast to empty for the rest of the tank. So, the 3/4, half and 1/4 readings seem meaningless. Also, the gauge and SID do not give me as much reserve, or warning (of an empty tank) as the manual says they should. The manual indicates that the fuel gauge can be adjusted by the dealer. How is it adjusted, and does that adjustment affect the SID too? Can I do it myself? Why is the sky blue? P.S. I love the 9-3--no complaints, just questions.
