Afterwards, and after I obtained a permanent scar on my left forearm, I learned of a trick that Saab mechanics use. Do not try to remove the alternator from its bracket (the firewall gets in the way). Simply remove the bracket with the attached alternator from the engine. Hope you don't strip anything.
