hello, you didn't say what engine, whether you had A/C or not, etc, but here is my observations based on doing the same job on an '87 900 Turbo 16v w/ A/C. I went thru the same process/job you are asking about, and even tried silly things like undoing all the bolts, and trying to tilt the whole unit backwards/forwards, never gaining enough clearance. please note, this was done on my '87 900 Turbo 16v, so if its off a little please adjust accordingly. the way to do it best is: first you should have already removed the alt belt (just hang it/them out of the way w/ wire or something), and completely remove the adjustment bolt for the alternator from the alternator and bracket - then that is out of the way. also, de-tension and remove the A/C belt from the pulley on the A/C pump (presuming you have A/C). then, remove the 3 bolts that hold down the alternator mounting "boss". (hint: a ball-end (Bondhus all) Allen wrench works wonders, along with a short, small pipe the right size to just slip onto the Allen, or a closed end wrench leveraged onto the Allen wrench). then after the mounting bracket is loose, remove the 2 bolts that hold down the top end of the bracket to which all the A/C is attached (again, presuming you have A/C). (you might need to unfasten the mounting points, but not disconnect, an A/C hose or two) then you can flip the entire A/C unit out of the way of the alternator - just don't let it hang from the hoses or wires. now, at last the entire alternator and mounting bracket will come out together. just slide the pivot bolt out and swap the pulley across. this doesn't actually take very long at all. I did it in several hours (about 4-5) on a Sunday - and I'm REALLY slow, meticulous and picky when I do things. the curse of being a perfectionist! ;-) to re-install, reverse the process. feel free to email me directly if you have any questions. ngoddardnopsamnect.net -- Nate t.
