Subject: Erratic Temperature Gauge

Good day; The temp gauge in my '94 900 (with the V6) has been behaving oddly and I wonder if people have similar experiences and comments on what the problem could be. When I first start the car, the gauge appears to work fine, rising to almost the halfway point within 5 minutes or so (it's cool in Ottawa at this time of year...). Then the needle will just drop to the rest position, and for the next 5 minutes or so, will continuously begin to rise a bit, then fall, never getting above halfway, and never staying there for long before falling back to rest. After 10 minutes of driving, the needle simply stays in the rest position. However, I did notice that if the car is put under some load (say >4500 rpm) the needle will begin to rise slightly, but will fall back to rest as soon as the load is decreased. I don't think it's something like a bad wire - it seems more like a sensor-based problem, but what sensor and where?! Any suggestions appreciated.
