I just got done replacing gasket and head. the head was used from bone yard.I did my own work.My cost was in the neighborhood of 200.00 for parts.My fan switch relay went out which caused the water to boilover and the head cracked.My 84 900 had at the time 150 plus thousands miles.I don't know if the p o had any trouble with it althought I supect they did as I got the car at an auction for 500.00 dollars.It was a new car trade and looks in excellent condition.When ran prior to sale it didn't have any sweet smell from the exhaust to show it was using antifreeze.Hope that this might have help in some small way. BTW the guys on here help me alot to do this job by answering my questions. The master tech was great help in many areas that I lack on.
