If the cutoff is abrupt, consider the ignition switch as the possible cause. A few weeks ago I had the problem that the engine would die after starting as soon as I released the key, but with a little jiggling of the ignition switch I could keep it lit. The local Saab mechanic told me that this wasn't a common problem, but neither was it an unknown one. Next time the engine dies, try moving the key back and forth to see if there is any effect.
