Subject: Re: Check Engine Light on 1996 900SE: More Developments in the Soap Opera

No, the car is dark green, not blue. But I'll look for a sympathy car in the glovebox, if that is Saabist etiquette. At the moment, there appear to be two simple solutions: (1) Take out the appropriate fuse and leave it out for a few minutes, so that the monitoring system resets itself, and the light goes. On past experience, it will come on again after about a week, and then I would repeat the process. (2) Take a roll of electrical tape, and cut a piece a little larger than my thumbnail. Stick it over the place on the instrument panel where the check engine light shows. Of course, I'm still not absolutely sure that there's no underlying problem, although the car runs fine. It's beginning to look as though my next move will be to replace the gas cap. It has been tested, but it's just possible, I suppose, that there's something wrong there. However, more and more this is beginning to look like a deliberate attempt by Saab to torment me. I'm thinking it's a Bergmanesque version of "Gaslight." (My other car is a 1990 Mazda MX5 Miata. A WONDERFUL car. Not only tremendous fun, but extremely reliable. I've owned it for two and a half years, and the only work I've had done on it is replacement of the backup light switch. It now has 117,000 miles on it, and shows every sign of going on to 200,000.)
