You have to find out the exact conditions when the noise occurs. neutral or in gear, clutch engaged or not, speed range and gear. If pinion bearing, then they need to take the gear box out. Some repairs are always to be expected; the car is 9 years old. But if garage knows their stuff, the money may not be wasted. The worst is really botched repair job. Johannes
