Remove the bulbholders (gray colloured) located at the top of the instrument cluster. The intermittent illumination of the bulbs could be caused by poor contact of the bulbholder to the cluster, try to bend the contacts of the bulb holder. 2. If you want to take a look to the speedometer it is neccesary to remove the entire instrument cluster, which is a hell of a job. You have to remove the steering wheel, facia panel by removing the four screw located at the bottom of the facia panel, note the diffrent length of the screws. Remove the vacuum connector of the defroster selector switch noting the position of the vacuum hoses. Tilt the facia panel away. To remove the instrument cluster remove the electrical connectors on both LH and RH side at the back of the cluster and speedometer cable, accessable via the opening which arose when the defroster/speaker grille was removed. Unscrew the cluster (four screws) and withdraw the cluster. The speedometer vcan be removed from the cluster for futher examination. If neccessary replace it. I assume that you can get a good used one for a fair price. I once bought a good cluster for about $10 (Netherlands). When installing the facia panel again note the heater selector rod which is running from the heater selector switch to the selector valve. Be convinced it is connected on both sides, otherwise you have to open the panel again. Good luck and be patient. Arjen Nijhof (1978 96, 1991 900i) NB. When you removed the facia panel you got an oportunity to replace all bulbs (selector switches of the heater, defroster selector and cigarette lighter) and control lights (oil press, battery, daylight driving light etc.)
