The "matched speaker impedance is important ONLY between the left and right speakers of the same couple. Choosing different impedance for front and rear can serve other reasons. One reason can be that the 8 ohm couple can consummate half the power that consummate the 4 ohm couple if driven by the same type of amp. This can be used for better balance between front and rear or when use a more weak front amp. Or the speakers used in front can be more sensitive (produces more db/W) or could be smaller and must protect from excessive power etc. Anyway it is not an indication of low quality. It is a matter of choose. As for the wire thickness. An 8 ohm speaker have a resistance of about 6-7 ohm produced by the very thin wire of his coil. In Hi-Fi hi end home speakers the resistance of the wire is important as even the smallest declination can change the thiele-small parameters of the speaker resulting in a not so good control of the low frequency in tuned loudspeakers. In the frequencies well above the resonance, the in series resistance is of less importance. BTW, many audio amp manufacturers from the best, they technically augment the output resistance of their amps. Naim audio, one of the best manufacturers put a 0,22 ohm resistance in series in the output. Tube amps have output impedance between 0,1 and 1 ohm. A benefit from the augmented in series resistance is a more "musical" sound, less hard. This can be explained why, but ofcourse not here. So the wire you said cannot augment the resistance more than 0,1 to 0,2 ohm. This has no negative effect in the overall sound quality, especially if this resistance is a calculated part of the speaker circuit. -- Dimitris M diol47nopsammhotmail.com PS: I am Electronic Engineer, specialized in hi-end home and pro audio amplifier design as also in loudspeaker design. > Just removed the facrory speakers in a 1996 Saab > and found out the following: > > The rear speakers had 4 ohm ipedance, while the > front speakers had 8 ohm impedance.
