Subject: Re: Annoying (and worrying) oil Leak - '91 9000

Saab 9000's that I've had always use synthetic oil (and places in the UK, like ATS, list the correct oil for the car). Regarding noise - there are three places to get noise from a higher mileage 9000 - tappets, timing chain, and idle balancer chain. As "TS" said earlier, from cold the hydraulic tappets may tick for a little while, this is usual. On higher mileage (over 110k) cars, the problem is often the timing chain and/or idle balancer chain. These are located at the end of the engine, drivers side. If the timing chain is rattling, DO NOT let it carry on for long - whilst I'm told they rarely break, they will wear a hole in the timing chain cover, and all the oil will be lost. When changing the timing chain/sprockets, it's as well to do the idle balancer chain etc as well, as they are next to each other.
