Subject: Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaab (WAS: Re: APC Solenoid Valve Problem?)

Thanks guys for the replies and the helpful background information. My car went "in" today: 1. The oil leak (nasty - losing about a pint every couple of days). The dipstick tube had a whopper hole in it. The result was the obvious lost oil as well as lost oil pressure, hence the constant "chattering" noise from the rocker box. There was also a loss of oil from the oil pressure switch which is located just above the oil filter. This is aparently common. The guy at the garage took about 30 seconds under the hood and told me about both these leaks. Cost of parts: 3.50 UKP (!) The chattering is still there, but disappears after about a couple of minutes as per the description in the manual. I also did an oil change and treated myself to some Mobil 1. 2. Poor turbo performance. Following the tests with the solenoid valve, such as removing the charge hose for one test run and the waste outlet for a second test run I was convinced the valve was defective. NB anyone not done this before - careful fiddling with pipes near hot turbos - I'm still wincing at the burns across my fingers :( The solenoid valve checked out fine - the APC box was duff. This was partly due to some doofus fitting an alarm and leaving the APC box dangling and thrashing about inside the LHS fender. Cost of parts: 50 UKP My new APC box has the correct bracket fitted and I'll be rigging something up to hold this in place now - the alarm is in the way, so I can't actually put the APC box back where it should be. Total labour cost: 40 UKP for 2 hours work. My experience with mechanics since I got my 1988 900T is that they either run away or simply take ages to find what is quite obvious to a specialist. I would like to recommend the garage publicly. They know Saabs and they are honest and reasonable about the work and the parts involved. Aeromotive Saab Specialists, 136 Leeds Road, Howden Clough, Birstall, Batley, UK, WF17 0HH Telephone: 01924 422200 The address may look a little obscure, but they're not too far from the M62 off junction 26 - very accessible for anyone in (West) Yorkshire. I'm very happy, in fact grinning like an idiot :P and just been for a sweet burn.
