The other part of your question was whether the car needed an extended warranty. I have a 1999 9^3 with 23k and the car has been relatively problem free. Except for when the SID (LED display) needed to be replaced. It was under warranty, of course, but if it hadn't been, I'm sure it would have cost a bundle to fix. Lot's of sophisticated electronics on these cars. IMHO, an extended warranty is worthwhile.
