He is not interested in a roof rack. I use a Rhode Gear hatch/trunk mount bike rack with good results. Fortunately, I have a Saab 900 with real rain gutters, so I can easily and inexpensively mount a canoe on the top and a bike on the back. The Rhode Gear bike racks are adjustable, so the same mount will fit my Volvo and Sienna as well. I bought mine for $90 and now you can buy it for $60 and it hold three bikes.
