I guess YMMV. Myself and family have had an 82 Dodge Charger that needed to have the body/trunk seams completely resealed after purchase and had the wheel bearings die at 17K miles. A Ford Taurus needed a new transmission at 72K miles ('known problem with this transmission'). A 93 Ford Escort needed major emissions control work at 65K. A 97 Buick Regal needed brakes at 17K and an intake manifold gasket at the same time. GO take a look at what owners report to Consumer Reports and then try to tell me how reliable American cars are. Personally, I've yet to see an American car that did NOT require major non-maint work during, or unfortunately after, warranty. My Japanese cars, OTOH, have required minimal work throughout their lives. Bob
