Subject: Re: Water Injection

On the subject of Water Injection, I really can't recommend anything better than the following site. It's from a commercial organisation, Aquamist, who sell water injection kit, but also provides a really excellent FAQ section which explodes a lot of the myth and mystery surrounding this topic. http://www.aquamist.co.uk/ The good bit is difficult to find so here's the navigation path: "Aquamist Resources" "FAQs" "Click Here To Start" Then click on the items in the "Index" and read the text on the left. The following FAQs are included: 1. My turbo car runs standard boost, would water injection increase the power output ? Water injection will not increase the power normally. But in countries where the ambient temperature is very high, injecting water will lower the inlet charge temperature and produces power increase. 2. I would like to increase my power output by increasing the boost pressure, would water injection help then? It all depends, if you have good quality fuel and the ambient is not too high you can normally get away with 2-3 psi of boost increase without using water injection and will not run into detonation problems. On the other hand, if you DO NOT have good quality fuel and the ambient temperature is high and there is a slight tendency to engine knock, water injection or a bigger intercooler is essential. 16. I have a normally aspirated car, would water injection help me to obtain more power? No, in general. Unless you decided to increase the compression ratio, more advance ignition or run lower fuel grade than recommended by the manufacturer. But really, visit the site, there's loads more in there. The impotant thing you learn is that water injection does not (normally) increase power by itself. Water injection, like methonol, is used to raise the threshold at which detonation (aka "knock" or "pinking") will occur after having taken steps to raise the power by some other means, e.g. skimming the head, raising the turbo boost pressure. So, if you aren't pinking, (and you don't live in Death Valley), then water injection is most probably not for you. Please Note: If you are pinking, then turn the engine off. or at least avoid high load conditions. PINKING SERIOUSLY DAMAGES ENGINES. You must take steps to lower the engine's compression ratio, introduce an intercooler, or raise the octane value of your fuel. Water injection is one step that you might consider under these circumstances.
