Subject: engine power loss after a/c rechage work

Just had a non saab mech (good reputation in NYC) recharge my air conditioner. When I drove the car out from the mech. the acceleration seemed a bit weak/sluggish on city streets the moment I switched on the a/c. A few minutes later, I tried to merge onto FDR highway, and acceleration was so weak did not even make it out of the "yield lane" (lucky for me, I would have been rear ended by a car doing 55) Tried to merge again, and seemed to be fairly ok. After driving for ten minutes, hear a groaning sound, the a/c started blowing hot air and car was not driving normally. After another ten minutes, started getting cold air again, and performed seemed labored. I got to my destinations, let car sit for 15 minutes. Started it up again, switched on a/c after a minute of normal driving, and immediately heard 3 successive shieking/scraping/rubbing type sounds and turned of a/c immediately. Car currenly drives normal without a/c on. Phoned the mech, and they said a/c should have no effect on car performance, but to bring it in on Monday. Questions: Does anyone recognize these symptoms? Should I trust the mech to look at it again, or just bring it to my normal sabb mech (spreens in NJ). Sorry for the long post, but cool air notwithstanding, concerned mainly about safety for my family. Thanks in advance
