Subject: Air temperature issues using stock air box vs. K&N cone

So, I was about to order the K&N cone filter kit for my 90' 900spg when I started thinking about air temperature. The current, slightly convoluted, airbox takes air from outside the engine bay right where the APC unit is located. From a temperature perspective, this is great because it is relativly shielded from engine bay heat, but from a flow perspective doesn't work very well. There is no clear path for fresh air to enter above the fender well (besides the gaps around the headlight), and once it does enter that area, it has to go through all that piping just to get to the air mass meter. However, if I were to use the K&N cone right off of the air mass meter, it seems like I would be getting much warmer air. I know that this is bad for combustion (even with the intercooler) and may also effect the air mass meter's heat filiment. I was considering taking the air intake from the turbo unit and rerouting it to the other side of the engine (by the battery) and down underneath the car where a K&N filter could suck cool air from under the car. It seems like this would be a shorter route for air than the stock airbox, with roughly the same number of turns, but I would be getting cold air, and could also use one of those little air scoops under the car to help force air into the system. Does anyone have any thoughts on airflow/temperature. Can you think of a reason not to reroute the air intake down past the battery? Has anyone had ill-effects from the heat issue of taking air from the engine bay? Am I nuts? Thanks, and sorry for the long-winded post (monday morning, first cup of coffee down, mind scattered...). -Dan -- Dan Schleifer | 804.242.5088 | dannopsamis.cc Fenris Security
