Subject: 1984 900 has developed a shimmy

At speeds above 60mph, the car gets a periodic shimmy. Also, when accelerating up steep hills at low speeds, I hear sort of a droning throb that might correspond with wheel revolutions. I also sometimes notice the throb/drone accelerating on flat roads from a stop. Steering also seems to be getting "loose." I need to correct more often and there seems to be more play. A Saab mechanic I just started using in the area replaced all four ball joints after I had clunking in front end, which is now gone. He says after checking it out that I also need to replace the inner tie rod (?) and possibly the steering rack. Anyone know whether these repairs fix the driving problems? Mechanic seems like he knows what he's doing, but it never hurts to get a second opinion! Thanks, -jw -- 1984 900 S 130,000 mi.
