Subject: Flywheel came apart



Does anyone any experience or ideas on what could cause the starter gear
ring on the flywheel to come off?  I heard a funny tinny sound coming
from the motor while driving home the other night.  When I tried to
start the car in the morning, the starter motor spun up, but did not
turn over the motor.  When I pulled out the starter, it was obvious that
the gear on that should be a part of the flywheel was off.

Any insight will be appreciated.
