Subject: Re: Engine / Tranny Replacements for 1988 8 valve 900

Like the other response, I would like to know the problems you are having. If it is the transmission only, it would be better to replace it only. Ericsson has rebuilt units and come well recommended. Other parts to replace 'while you are there': oil pump o-ring, front and rear main seals, valve cover gasket, make sure a NEW shift shaft seal and boot is installed, reboot and grease the inner drivers of the half shafts. Inspect and maybe replace: harmonic damper pulley, clutch (if so, rebuild, with new seals, the slave cylinder, replace throwout bearing and pilot bearing). While the engine is out, inspect the timing chain for stretch and ensure that a late model chain tensioner is being used. Where are you located? If the body is on good shape, it is a good idea as the car will last a long while longer. If indeed the engine is dead, I would suggest staying with whatever came in it. 8V. The fuel injection systems are much different and unless you enjoy the project, it is a bit more work, though a 16V engine can run with 8V fuel injection and there is information available to assist in this project. Let us know.
