I must admit I don't know the explanation. In other cars I have owned, the gearbox oil is usually of a different type than the engine oil because the friction between the gear wheels occur under extreme pressure. Normally, gearbox oil is specified as HP oil (high pressure). Saab uses ordinary oil for the gearbox. Maybe synthetic is less pressure resistant, but this is a guess. Johannes
