The easiest way to test if the alternator is charging is to simply disconnect the battery lead while the motor is running. If the alternator is not providing a charge the engine will stop as the only source of power for the ignition is the battery. If the engine keeps running it means that the alternator is providing a charge BUT may also mean that there might be a problem with the relay that switches between the battery and alternator. The relay (generic terminology) basically tells the alternator when the battery is fully charged and stops it from charging. If it got 'stuck' in the off position the ignition system would have drained the battery. Hope this helps Peter Wallington.
