On my '93 9000CSE when it was generating engine codes I found that there is a way you can see in what general area the malfunction is without using the Saab proprietary ISAT scan tool. You simply turn the key from off to on, but don't start the engine. As the idiot lights begin to extinguish themselves, the check engine light will remain on and then begin to flash in a pattern. In my case, the flash code was originally a 5 which equates to a bad throttle position sensor. My car has TCS which means it doesn't have a throttle position sensor. I later got a 6 code which is the O2 sensor. When the engine began to perceptibly stumble I replaced the spark plugs (which had apparently never been replaced by the previous owner) and ba-da-bing!!
