Subject: Re: Turbo Cooling

hello, as to the oil question - avoid the wide-ranged oils, and absolutely DO use full synthetic. it is proven to perform better in protecting your engine when hot/running hard/etc. note: the one time to not use synthetic is a BRAND new engine (0 miles) or right after a rebuild. use a conventional oil so that proper break-in can occur. also, Saab lists 10W-30 motor oil as ok for the tranny, which is true, but that is one place not to use a regular engine synthetic - its too slippery for proper life/operation of the synchros. instead use a conventional motor oil, or better yet, use a synthetic tranny oil which has additives to address such issues. a good example (I use it) is Redline's MTL (manual tranny lube). as to the warm-up/cool-down there is some truth. as stated you always want to wait 5-15sec for the oil to come to full pressure in the engine before revving or driving, when you have started, but the main reason to avoid punching it, until the temp gage has touched "green", is to protect the rest of the engine. you are putting loads on the engine, and stresses/pressures on the head/gasket/etc that they handle better having heat-expanded to a tighter/closer fit. as to the cool-down... it too has an element of truth that shouldn't be ignored. if you just hammered it down the block, pulled in, and shut off the turbo hasn't had a chance to cool from idling in the "breeze" (both internally and externally) and any oil that stays in the bearings has the potential to cook. if it does, and burns, then it can leave ash deposits the can be harmful because they aren't washed away right away by more oil. just my .02$ -- Nate t. You probably all do this without even realising. how many of you floor the > gas as soon as the engine and keep teh revs above 3K rpm for more then a second > or so. How many of you switch teh engine off above 3K. not many. I bet you all > startup and pull out into teh road before flooring it, and pull into your > driveway slowly. This is all the time it takes with good oil pressure!
