You need an OBD II scan tool to read the error code from the vehicle's computer. The error code is called a Diagnostic Trouble Code, or DTC. With this DTC, you can determine the problem. You can turn off the Check Engine light with a scan tool. Be sure to get a universal scan tool since it can be used on all 1996 and newer vehicles you purchase in the future. J1850 PWM, J1850 VPW, and ISO 9141 are OBD II protocols. A good tool will do them all. Auterra sells an inexpensive Palm OS handheld DIY unit at www.auterraweb.com.
