Actually 400 mi. on 16 gallons does equal 25 mpg if I calculated right. I also believe it states right in the owner's manual of my 1984 900 S that the gas tank capacity is 16 gallons (the manual is in the car so I can't check it right now). When my trip odometer says around 325 mi. after I fill up, my gas gauge is in the red, but that brings me to my own question: Does the mid-80s 900 have a "reserve" tank? That is, if the needle is pinned at the bottom are there still 2 gallons in the tank? That might indicate that you can indeed get close to 400 mi. on a full tank. As I recall, the owners manual says that when the empty gas light is on solid, there's 1.8 gallons left. Maybe this is the "reserve" tank?
