Actually 400 mi. on 16 gallons does equal 25 mpg if I calculated right. I also believe it states right in the owner's manual of my 1984 900 S that the gas tank capacity is 16 gallons (the manual is in the car so I can't check it right now). When my trip odometer says around 325 mi. after I fill up, my gas gauge is in the red, but that brings me to my own question: Does the mid-80s 900 have a "reserve" tank? That is, if the needle is pinned at the bottom are there still 2 gallons in the tank? That might indicate that you can indeed get close to 400 mi. on a full tank. As I recall, the owners manual says that when the empty gas light is on solid, there's 1.8 gallons left. Maybe this is the "reserve" tank? I've had the light flash on around corners but never had it light up solid. -jw -- 1984 900 S hatchback 135,000 mi.
