What makes you think you're getting 40 miles per gallon? I doubt that.
Probably more like 20-25.
Second, do you believe you can use every drop of fuel in the tank before
you need a refill? I don't.

16? 14? who cares?....

Just pick a number like 250 (miles) & re-fill it then.

Or just replace the level sending unit. It can't be too hard. (heh heh)
