I don't think the seals around the hatch are in any way deficient. Part of the problem may be that the car has leather seats, and leather rubbing against leather generates more noise than fabric rubbing against fabric. However, I do wonder whether, if I'd bought -- say -- a Subaru wagon with leather seats, there would be any noises of this kind. I suspect not.
