Subject: 1996 9000 CSE - faulty driver's seat

Hello all, I have a 1996 9000 with a driver's seat that has been dying over the last several months. The original diagnosis was a bad memory switch block (the seat was evidently "stuck" in one of the memory positions). This was replaced. After several weeks the same problem happened - that is, the seat stopped moving or moved in a very jerky fashion (ala a stepper motor). Again, the dealer replaced the memory switch block. A few more weeks pass and again the seat stops moving. This time the dealer claims they simply pulled the fuse and reinserted it to "reset the seat" and all was well. The day I picked up the car from the dealer, the seat didn't move. Because it was an afterhours pickup there was no one around. The next day I call and am told that the "ECU is beginning to fail" and am quoted $996.00 to have the problem fixed. If I pull and reinsert the fuse, I can make the seat move in that "stepper motor" jerky fashion. One one occasion, I did tried the fuse thing after pushing one of the memory buttons. After reinserting the fuse, the seat moved to the position I had pushed prior to walking around the car and opening up the fuse compartment. Now, I thought the ECU controlled the engine and not the driver's side seat. I've poked through the newsgroup archives and have found no one with a similar story. Is there anyone out there that might have some suggestions? I'm ever so suspicious the dealer gave me a line of BS since they may not want to replace the switch block again (which is covered under a 12 month/12K mile parts warrenty from the first replacement). Thanks in advance, Fred
