Subject: worn inner tie rod -- how far would you go?

I have a 1984 900 S, which has been diagnosed with a worn inner tie rod end by my very reliable local independent Saab mechanic. The vehicle periodically starts shimmy-ing above 60 mph or so, and the steering doesn't seem as tight as it once was. Problem is, my mechanic can't fix it until Sept. 12, his first opening. Unfortunately, I do not have the time or resources to fix it myself, although I'd like to. My question is, how far would you drive with a worn inner tie rod? I was planning to drive to northern Vermont from Rhode Island for the Labor Day weekend (about 500 mi. round trip). Will the thing snap on me? I plan to keep it under 65 mph or so, which is hard to do but given the circumstances... Probably difficult to say if you haven't seen it, but wondering if anyone has experience with this. Thanks, -jw -- 1984 900 S hatchback Providence, Rhode Island
