My '91 9000 2.3 turbo has started whining under acceleration and when I lift off the gas. Experience with other cars makes me think this is the main transmission bearing (pinion?) starting to die. Anyone like to comment on my diagnosis from a Saab specific viewpoint? If it is the bearing, which of the many bearings in the Saab 9000 tranny is the one (ones) I should be looking to replace - I've found plenty of pictures, but no annotations of the various bits, other than 'bearing' and 'gear'. Is this a highly specialised job, or one that can be tackled by a pretty experienced DIYer - also are any special tools required? If I should consider tackling this job are there any resources out there that will help in a tranny rebuild and what else should I be replacing whilst I have the tranny out and in pieces - the clutch springs to mind, but anything else? I know any reply may be quite long, but I would really appreciate any pointers before I resort to paying someone to recondition my tranny when I may be able to do it myself. btw how long is it likely to last before I get a complete and expensive total failure - i.e. should I get it off the road right now or can I continue to use it for a while at least? many many thanks in advance David
