Subject: 3.0 V6 broken timing belt, advice?

The timing belt on my father's '96 9000 CDE 3.0 V6 broke last weekend at 98k km. The local Saab dealer just had a first look at the engine and confirmed the belt had failed. They're estimating 4-5hrs of investigation to determine the full extent of the damage to the engine - big $$ Is it a bad idea to have the engine parts replaced piecewise, or is a used engine (with new belts) the way to go? Any V6 owners have a similar timing belt experience recently? I'm loving the chain in my '88 900 right now. Does the new 9-5 V6 still us a belt? Steve
