One is the pollen filter and the other is a charcoal filter designed to remove odors from the air. The original replacement interval was the pollen filter every 30K and the charcoal filter every 60K. Good thing on the charcoal filter, because the list price was like $160.00 USD. Mid-2000, the design changed to a single pollen filter that is impregnated with charcoal. This is the only filter now available. There is a bulletin that explains how to modify older 9-5s so that they can use this part. The filter is in the evap housing inside the car. You must remove the glove box, then 6 or 7 screws holding the right side evap housing cover on. Once this is done, you can remove the charcoal and pollen filters. Next, in order to install the new style, you must remove the original holder for the filters. You break it apart and pull out the pieces. I find that if I pull off the front trap door, then grabbing the top with a pair of pliers, I can pull the top of the frame down, then out. You must make sure you get all the parts out, so the new one will fit flush. I had one break off the back side and had a lot fun getting the last piece out. The filter comes as a kit. It contains the filter and a foam piece. The foam piece only needs to be used if the old one is damaged. I have not had to use one yet.. The new filter replacement interval is 30K, but you may have to replace it more often depending on your environmental conditions. I cuss this setup every time I do one. Good luck, Steve Crowe, CMAT/L1, Saab Master Tech scrowenopsamink.net Harpers Ferry, WV
