If you wear your seat belt properly and the car was NOT designed to require an airbag to meet the minimum safety standards - then you don't need airbags to save your life. Unfortunately, the new cars are designed to meet the safety standards when the air bags work and you are wearing seat belts - when the air bags fail, guess what. The classic Saabs and Volvos are from the era when they were designed to meet the safety standards without needing the added protection of air bags. I cannot say the same thing about Toyotas. I too am not a fan of air bags because I keep my cars well beyond a three year lease. Check the Owner's Manual - it says the air bags need to be checked or replaced after 10 years. I was taught by my parents to always wear the seat belt, I also learned by working in a hospital OR. I spent many a Saturday helping to save some driver's life because he was not wearing a seat belt and many of these were driving cars with air bags. The real, hard facts are that air bags ALONE will not do much to save your life, while seat belts by themselves will save most lives. An air bag in the dash or steer wheel will pad your upper body and face, but without a seat belt your legs will smash forward into the structure under the dash. I said we saved lives, not that everyone had legs to walk on after these accidents. > > > Davo
