I ran a 4 gauge wire from the battery to a power distribution box in the trunk of my 900. Half of the trunk was amps and sub woofers. I ran the wire through the same hole, but mine had a rubber seal to keep water out. The longer the length of the wire, the thicker the wire has to be to carry the same current. A short run in the engine compartment can use a thinner wire. Those amps and sub woofers do use a considerable amount of power - and yes you will run the battery down real quick if you don't have the engine running.
