This table has been around for a long time, and we now know the reason why Amsoil, other than their XL-7500 line of oils, is not API certified, and it is directly related to the amount of ZDDP (which is composed of zinc and phosphorus). Mobil 1 is about $3.25-3.50 per quart. Amsoil XL-7500 is $4.15-5.20 per quart (see http://amsoilrs.hypermart.net/sections/prices.html). Not a huge difference, but there is absolutely no scientific evidence that the XL-7500 is any better than the Mobil 1, so why spend an extra $8 or so at every oil change? Ironically, the non-API Amsoil oils probably are better for vehicles without catalytic converters than the API certified oils from other manufacturers. The higher level of ZDDP does provide additional wear protection in certain instances. If only Amsoil would change their marketing, the advantages of their products, in certain applications, would not be overshadowed by the image caused by MLM.
