Incidentally, you don't (and never did) have to change down through all the gears in the UK, just be in a gear. When coasting, it's considered that you don't have full control of the vehicle. Nobody complaind about that when using a bicycle on the public highway. You are supposed to change the speed you want with the brakes and then select to the appropriate gear directly. If that's 5th - neutral at a junction, then that's ok. Personally, I prefer to use engine braking as much as possible.
