Then you can only rely on the brakes which may easily overheat. I took an UK driving test around 1980, here any coasting was frowned upon, the car had to be in gear at all time. E.g. approaching a red light you had to change down 5-4-3-2 and then finally declutch at the light, handbrake too of course. I never practiced any of that afterwards. Johannes
