The mechanical engagement between the door lock and the strike plate is the same regardless of whether the door is locked or not. The only difference is that when the door is locked, the external (and sometimes internal) handle will not unlatch the door lock. There may be a case to be made for preventing accidental unlatching in a crash by locking the door. But that is a separate argument. Saying that the door is somehow more securely fastened when it is locked is just not true - again, not on the cars I've worked on. Grunff
