Subject: Torque and Power

I understand the fundamental make up of torque and power; ie torque is force X distance and Power is force per unit time. However, what does this mean in terms of a car's performance? That is if two equally weighted and geared cars are able to produce equal power and different torques and vice versa, which will accelerate faster? Generally power is quoted to give you an impression of a car's ability to accelerate, but what does greater torque do at the same power? Is it better to develop an engine with more power or more torque if you want greater acceleration? What does power and torque mean in terms of what a car feel like to drive? Anybody know? Pete the curious
