Ah, I sympathize. My sister and I have 1990 900Ses, and we've had a similar
problem except it seems to only affect one of our lights most of the time.
Occasionally, I've lost both lights for a few minutes, but not long enough for it
to be nuisancesome. The dealer replaced the faulty light a few times, but it
seemed that even a small bump in the road and it would be gone again, so now I
just rely on the one good light. Unfortunately, I don't remember what the dealer
said the problem was (it was a few years ago), so I can't be much help. I
recommend taking the car to the dealer and getting the problem properly diagnosed
(and an estimate on the cost to fix it) and then consider some alternative way to
light that area of the dash. If you don't mind the DIY look, you could always
attach one of those small battery-powered reading lamps. You could stow it in the
glove compartment and only bring it out for longer trips when you really need to
see the instrument panel.
