Doesn't sound normal at all. I have a 98 900 SE and no problem with the remotes. When you say it seems to work sometime and not others, is it with the same set of batteries in the remote? If so, it might be a bad connection at the battery points of contact. Likely you have tried cleaning these contacts and use some contact cleaner as well. The end of a pencil eraser that is fairly new and clean does a good job on contacts while not causing injury to them. Otherwise, if it is really eating batteries, must be a short. If you suspect this is the case, hook up a milliamp meter in series with a battery and see if there is any draw when you are not activating the remote. Hope this helps.
