Just a thought: my 1999 (European) 9-3 has a 68 liter fuel tank ('00 models are already sold in 1999 if I understand correctly). That would amount to 18 gallons US. So it just might be that you still had a gallon left. The next model year (the cars sold in 2000) only have a 64 liter (= 16.9 US gallons) tank.
