The auto box in my 1990 9000S was working great when I sold it at 230k miles. Every 100k miles the o-rings in the governor would go, causing it to shift up too soon (symptom was horrible though, the car would buck violently accelerating from a stop). Fairly easy to fix, took me about 3 hours each time, parts less than $50. I think most shops would rather replace the unit than do an easy fix like this.
