Kenneth S. <nimrodnopsams.com> pressed random keys until the following was produced: (snip) > Then there are all the problems that anyone who reads this news group > for long will know about -- instrument lights blacking out, Never heard of that, or do you mean the black-panel *feature*? > a stereo > system that requires you to go to the Saab dealer to have a CD player > installed, Check Crutchfield. Oh, and by having a radio that fits only Saab, you're not too likely to have your radio stolen, are ya... > and so on and so on. We've had lengthy discussion about this. Logical grouping of controls (keeps your hand motions all in the same place when starting up the car - handbrake, key, and gearshift are right there - more efficient). Also, it allows a better locking of the gearshift mechanism with the key. Further, it keeps the keys from smashing into your knee in a collision - I'm a firefighter and EMT, and have seen this several times. A knee impaled on keys is not fun or pretty. Just because you haven't thought of the reason for something, doesn't mean there isn't a good one that you haven't considered. > Meantime, it's subject to obvious risks like > having things spilled into the ignition slot. Everything you've described above seems to be an intentional design decision based on logic. > Of course, my Saab's a 1996, and for all I know later models > don't have these problems. I certainly hope so. Depends on if you consider them a problem or not. You also didn't mention things like having the fuses and fluids in easily accessible locations, the ease of servicing most of the normal things (oil filter location and orientations), etc. If you're looking for problems, sure, you can define some of the features to be problems if you want, but if you'd look at any other car the same way, you'd be able to find much more serious defects to complain about. Like Chrysler's perpetually broken auto-trans, that they rename every few years, despite the internals remaining the same broken design. Don't even get me started on that. Dave Hinz
