Depending on your financial position (changing the timing chain, sprockets, guides, and the same with the idle balancer stuff on a 2.3, is not a cheap job) you can let it go on a bit once you detect a noise. It even helps if you can pinpoint any noise to the timing chain or the idle balance chain.
