Hi Peter, just got my car back. The dealer (Alec Mildren) got one of their mechanics out to look at it while I was there. He knew the history and explained why they tried to de-carbonise the cylinder heads. Apparently it was due to a sticking valve lifter, so since the de-carbonising did not fix the problem they suggested a full valve-lifter replacement with a newer type of valve-lifter. They kept the car for a week but also replaced the turbo while they had it apart and a cdi unit and a few other bits and pieces. It was all fixed under warranty with minimal cost to me ($80 for some oils etc). I was extremely pleased with the dealers initiative. Unfortunately my wife drove off with the car when we picked it up and I haven't driven it yet :(, but I am an extremely happy saab owner today. Thanks for the heads up about the extended warranty, that makes me feel a lot more comfortable. I will get it in June when the manufacturers warranty runs out. I really like the car and would like to keep it for a long time as long as it keeps going without too many repairs. A friend who is also a happy saab 9-5 owner (same model, similar miles and no problems) suggested I take my own synthetic oil along for the changes as he thinks the oil the dealers use is a mixture of synthetic/fossil oil. Any comment on this ? Regards, Paul P.
